After reading this piece I now know why my husband never talked about his time in the Navy in World War II. He was a good husband and was great to our three children. I am sure he did not want to bother us with the horrible things he saw and lived through. I have many happy memories that will last me till the end. Thanks for bringing this information to lite.

Well yes, just as Christianity wiped out the Roman pantheon. They could reach back to their first peoples and leave off quibbling. But then, by that reasoning I suppose U.S. schools should put scalps on the walls instead of prints of George Washington and his painful wooden teeth.

I think maybe 40 years ago people peddling food were more conscious of the fact that food left out for awhile might make the customer sick. Today they’ve either forgotten, or don’t care.

The Romans kind of wiped out the Etruscans. Not sure their heirs consider the Etruscans part of “Italian culture.” Though they should.

If they’re worried about ebbing Italian culture, why don’t they put Etruscan friezes on the schoolroom walls? A lot more locally grown than a grotesquely sculpted memento of a dying Jewish prophet.

Never noticed before how many adverbs Hal used when he was operational–an irritating amount. Then he clings at the end to simple subject-verb-object.

Will Dave rescue us when we’ve all retreated to our corners, clutching our mobile units to our chests? Or maybe we’ll be scratching the places in our heads where they’ve been implanted.

I can feel it, Dave.

Without the Internet, I couldn’t make a living. But I could read more books, as I slowly expired, like Hal, remembering old nursery rhymes and tunes.

Why O Why do we have to do all this experimenting on animals? All the money spent on these procedures could be used for the cure of many illness. We do not need to go to the moon or any other space place. We need help hear on earth. Really enjoyed this piece.

This is so true!!!! When I go to get a pizza and see all the people eating from the lunch bar, I wonder how they can eat that food that everyone has touched or sneezed on. I remember when my family was young, we use to go to a family dinning place and ate from the buffet. The food was good and we all enjoyed it. That was over 40 years ago and maybe things were different then.
